What do you do when good projects go bad?

Do you snap your needles and cast them aside in disgust? Do you set fire to your mangled yarn and watch with grim satisfaction? Do you simply heave a great sigh and walk away?

Or do you find a way to laugh about it…eventually?

We know how you feel. Part of being an artist is making mistakes, sometimes big ones, and our sense of humor keeps us going until we’ve patched things up and feel like geniuses again! So let’s take a moment to commiserate with these poor critters in the throes of knitting woes. After all, we’ve all been there…

excite

The thrill of a new project! A tidy ball of fresh yarn, full of potential! A pattern with secrets waiting to be unlocked! The best part of your project is the beginning! But then…

easy

Something isn’t going quite right. Your stitch count isn’t adding up. Is that a lace motif or is something unravelling? And you’re pretty sure that a pullover should have armholes somewhere. Suddenly you begin to question why you’re knitting this thing in the first place…

sweater

But you forge ahead, determined to make the best of it. So what if it doesn’t look exactly like the picture? You can overlook a few…um…modifications. This knitter’s no quitter!

washing

And gosh darn it, you are going to love that little monster in spite of its bad behavior. You are going to love it and use it and take care of it. You’ll even follow those ridiculously complicated washing instructions (is that Celsius or Fahrenheit? Surely an ice bath isn’t necessary…) because it may not be perfect, but it’s uniquely yours!

run

Ultimately, even your friends and family will appreciate your genius and be awed by your creations…

superpower

Because even when it doesn’t go exactly as planned, you have done something special. Using only sticks, string, and a few mysterious words, you have created a useful and beatiful, one-of-a-kind project. That’s pretty close to magic…and don’t ever let ’em tell you different!

If you’d like to learn more about overcoming some of the most common pitfalls in knitting, don’t forget that we’re offering our ever popular Mastering Mistakes Class in just a few short weeks. We’d love to see you there!

And until then…keep laughing!

I just stuff bad knitting into a closet until I’m sane again, And in the meantime move on! Ask my co-conspirator in things knitterly about “that vest” of mine! We’re both laughing about it’s current “time out” status.

Critters and knitting go together; so glad you showed us!

Loved the adorable pictures and a chance to laugh at my knitting craziness!
Wanted to say thanks again for a great mystery knit-along. I especially loved meeting the mystery designer. Thanks Sheri for all the extra hints and suggestions that you sent to us along the way with the clues to ensure our success. Looking forward to soaking and blocking my scarf. I love the different lace patterns.
